Fareham Ladies 2nd vs Ladies 1st

Fareham 2s 1-6 Gosport
20th March 2010

So a rather rushed start to the game this week, without our coach at the helm due to ill health, the team almost fell apart barely enough players to start the game!!!

The game started and was fairly evenly balanced for the first 10 minutes with a Fareham team that appeared to have been strengthened to cope with a Gosport side that was on a winning streak!  Joni Duffus who glided into the midfield due to the absence of team regular Sam Mitchell, pushed the team forward and the game was played in the Fareham half. Having plotted the Fareham down fall the three musketeers Lou Brackstone, Emma Briggs and Gaynor Toms took to the field in a three way substitution. The three combined well, with Lou Brackstone causing mayhem in the Fareham D. After an initial shot by Brackstone (which the keeper failed to clear convincingly), Gaynor Toms followed up and despite the keeper bringing Toms down she still managed to use her experience to touch the ball round the keeper and across the line for the first goal (0-1).  Brackstone and Toms combined again for the second goal – a shot from the top of the circle from Toms which came back off the post but was followed up well by the tenacious Lou Brackstone (0-2). The third goal came quite quickly with play being broken down in the midfield right from the start by Hannah Masson.  She played the ball to Imi Demetriou, who was finding acres of space on the right in her new position of right half.  Demetriou used amazing skills to humiliate the Fareham defence and played an amazing forward ball to Cara Beames. Beames collected the ball and had a sharp shot, the keeper managed to get a toe to it only for it to come to Toms who wrong footed the keeper and played it into the right hand corner.  Half time 0-3.

However the mood had definitely changed on the pitch for the second half and Fareham were not going to roll over. This only pushed the Gosport Girls to perform as they had in recent weeks. Ably directed by captain Joni Duffus and supported by future England centre forward AJ Cree, Georgia Clist and Christina Nelson drove at the Fareham defence and peppered the goal with powerful shots. The fourth goal was always going to come, another telling run by Christina Nelson who crossed the ball to find Toms at around the penalty spot. Toms connected and with one touch sent the ball soaring into the roof net directly above the keepers head! (NICE!) (0-4) Fareham were unable to keep Gosport out of their 25 now. A number of penalty corners were tried before the team opted for the straight shot from the top. The ball out was perfect from Masson, Cree stopped with precision and Toms despatched forcing the player on the line behind the line with the power of the shot (0-5).  Fareham managed to slip through the defensive net despite good work from Danielle Rucewicz, Zoe Flanagan and Katherine Wiltshire. They forced a penalty corner which was struck well and inches wide of a diving Julie Way (1-5). Gosport were unperturbed though and pressed forward again with new vigour due to the arrival of unsurpassable AJ Cree on the forward line. Hannah Masson who combined well with Georgia Clist forced her way through to the edge of the circle and struck a beauty from the top of the D (1-6). A well deserved result played against a Fareham side that played harder than their table position suggests they were capable of! Great effort Ladies!

Sausage verdict – AWOL!!! Substituted by a stinky jacket potato with beans – “who do they think we are?” screamed Cree!!!!!! “Athletes?????”

MOM – Gaynor Toms, second AJ (future England CF) Cree, third ?????
