Ladies 1st vs Havant Ladies 3rds

Gosport 1-2 Havant 3s

14th November 2009

A true 6 pointer and so early in the season?!

The white juggernaut that is Gosport ladies hockey team came across an immovable force in the Havant goalkeeper. With 6 teams trying to battle it out for 1st place in div 3 it has left the remaining 4 staring at the relegation places. Unfortunately for the whites they have ended up in the second of the two groups, along with today’s opponents Havant 3s

Storm conditions hit St Vincent as the game was stopped on 3 occasions for the goal falling over. The first 10 minutes saw a similar impact on the Gosport defence… early home team pressure saw a Havant counter catch the defence too high up the pitch as an unmarked centre forward had time and space in the D to slot passed debutant Carole Draper (GOAL). Not to be deterred Gosport continued attacking it what seemed like a 1-1-8 formation and were duly undone again as a number of mis-timed challenges went in on the Havant CH who then fed the CF who duly scored once more (GOAL).

2-0 down after 7 minutes against a team who lost their last outing 11-1 did not look good! It was only at this stage the whites really began to pitch together. Good tackling and subsequent passes kicked in in midfield with Sam Mitchell, Joni Duffus & Hannah Masson finally taking a full hold on the game. PCs came and went, balls were cleared off the line and other chances were duly saved by the oppo GK. Half time 0-2.

The second half started as the first ended, with chance after chance raining down on the Havant goal. Lou Brackstone started to show that class is permanent, only six weeks after giving birth, by running the LB ragged and creating opportunities and more PCs. Eventually one chance was put away, as the ball broke to MOM Hannah Masson on the P spot and soared into the top left corner via a deflection (GOAL).

With their tails up the ladies continued to press. One chance ended with the oppo defending stopping the ball on the line with a foot. PF. AJ Cree stood up, but it was just not meant to be as the ball slipped off the end of the stick straight towards the thankful GK. With 10 minutes remaining more chances came and went, with the ball travelling along the goal line at times but just not in. Full time 1-2.

The St Vincent pitch probably has never seen such a one sided game which ended up with a result for the opponents…. If Gosport carry on playing this way the only way is up (baby!? Sorry most of you will not remember Yazz)

MOM – Hannah Masson
