Gosport 0-2 Southampton Uni
6th February 2010
Ok, now where to start…
After two successive victories the home side went into the game with renewed confidence. Up against a strong Uni side however it was never going to be easy. Early exchanges came and went with perhaps Gosport edging the first 5 minutes of play. But then it all cam unstuck… progressive play down the Uni left allowed the ball to enter the white D, initial shot was saved by Julie Way, but the follow up was flicked into the net at the far post by the on rushing forward (GOAL 0-1). This only resulted in better play from the home team. With ball possession being the theme of the day, the midfield of Gosport began to dominate play. Awesome work rate by Sam Mitchell and Joni Duffus saw wave after wave of attacks rain down on the Uni D. Unfortunately the Southampton defence remained strong as the final pass really seemed to be lacking. Even when shots flew towards the oppo keeper she showed good skills in clearing the danger. Half time 0-1.
The second half continued much the same as the first. Southampton, with limited possession just sought the clear their lines. The home team full press reaping it’s rewards with further opportunities around the oppo D but just no end product. With 15 to go a rare chance came for the Uni at a PC. The final shot deflecting off of Zoe Flanagan’s stick passed the despairing Julie (GOAL 0-2). Not to be too dis-heartened the Mighty Whites went in pursuit once more of the ever elusive goal, but it was just not meant to be.
The result sends the ladies back to 8th in the table, but on this performance there is every chance to win all remaining games and finish the season on a high.
