Trojans 3rd vs Ladies 1st
21st November 2009
Away to the league leaders in an action packed encounter.
A change back to the old skool 1-3-4-2 formation would hopefully bring better luck. The return of Julie Way in goal, with the ever improving Lou Brackstone up front could hopefully begin to turn Gosport’s season. With the bottom two playing each other, a loss in this game would mean that the whites enter the drop zone for the first time this season…
Early exchanges saw Gosport dominate the ball against a home team playing with intensity and closing the play in 3s and 4s. The first 15 minutes saw chances fall to the whites in the oppo D, but with no end product. As the half progressed Trojans began to get a grip in the centre and down their right, leading to opportunities which were either well defended or saved by Julie. The Gosport work rate throughout the pitch was definitely better than it had been many times this season, with a fast flowing game ending the half 0-0.
The second half started as the first, but with the away team just a little slow out of the blocks. A few more of the 50-50s started going the way of Trojans and with 4 minutes gone it counted. The ball broke to the unmarked number 11 in the D and was duly dispatched (GOAL 1-0). 5 minutes later, after the award of a PC to the home side, the first shot deflected off of a stick into the face of AJ Cree on the Gosport goal line… BAD TIMES! With what later proved to be a minor double fracture of the cheekbone (but still no bruise?!) the tearful Cree had to leave the field for the remainder of the game. The umpires consulted and the resultant flick was sent on to a post with Julie sent the wrong way to her left. Trojans began to switch the play in the middle of the park and press down their right channel to greater effect. Further chances were dispatched as the whites lost their confidence (GOALS 4-0). However, the last 10 minutes of the half were played out in the red half of the pitch, with good approach play from Sam, Joni & Hannah but a lack of a final ball. In fairness the Trojans keeper ended up having a quiet game. Final score 4-0.
As Joni was chatting to the oppo in the showers after the game (???) it became evident that they had a couple of 2nd team players in the line up… making the performance of Gosport stand out even more.
