Waterside Ladies 1st vs Gosport Ladies 1st
Waterside 6-0 Gosport
16th January 2010
So then, the start of 2010. A new phase of the season and a real chance to show the rest of the league what Gosport are all about…. Oh dear!
42 seconds into the game and the first goal of the new year as an early attack by Gosport saw a poor turn over in possession. Waterside broke quickly on the loose ball, two flying tackles came and went and with a quick exchange on top of the D the ball ended up in the back of the net (1-0). The midfield exchanges seemed to be pretty even as the game settled after the early shock, but then more of the same saw the home take a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes. Only a few minutes later the Gosport defence presented the ball straight to the oppo forwards in the D to leave the score at 3-0 after only 23 minutes. A bit of confidence began to ease back into the Gosport ranks with a few penalty corner chances and opportunities in open play presenting themselves to the whites as they finally began to wake up in the closing minutes of the half. Half time 3-0.
Not for the first time this season a long chat ensued in the break with the resultant play at the start of the second period dramatically better. Ball possession and tempo became the key as pressure mounted on the Waterside defence and chance upon chance came and went. Turning to a 3-5-2 formation the whites continued their assault on the home team goal, with the keeper making some great blocks and some bad luck leaving the ball trickling just wide of the posts at times. However, with just 5 minutes remaining and the away team unable to get a foothold in the game the home team scored a 4th (4-0). Heads now down, a 5th and 6th came within minutes leaving one of the most flattering scorelines you are ever likely to see. Full time 6-0.
Special mention to Sam and AJ for clearing half a team’s worth of chips, sausages and onion rings between them at post match teas…
