Yateley 2s 6-2 Gosport
11th October 2009
Tough times in North Hampshire…
Going into the longest distance away game of the season there was renewed optimism after last week’s late victory. After trying to leave Julie Way at Sainsburys (still feeling the guilt for that one!), it was probably lucky in hindsight that she could make it. With a squad of 12 the focus was going to be on early possession and good play – it just wasn’t meant to be… early pressure from Yateley resulted in a number of chances and PCs and within the first 15 minutes Gosport found themselves 2-0 down (GOALS). In addition Danielle Ruzewicz caught a nasty deflected ball to the face during the early exchanges, ending in a bruised jaw.
A change of formation back to a more recognisable system brought better fortune. Carra Beames pressured the Yateley right back, picked up the ball, drove 15 yards to the top of the D and sent an unstoppable shot passed the keeper (GOAL). The optimism subsided pretty quickly mind, as Sam Mitchell suffered a badly twisted ankle shortly after, leaving the team with a bare 11 for the remainder of the game. As Gosport continued to struggle to keep the ball Yateley had a few more chances. Good defending from AJ Cree and good saves from Julie kept the score down. However, a sucker punch just before half time let Yateley in for their third (GOAL). Half time 3-1.
After a bit of a long chat at half time the team started the second half with some positive play. Georgia Clist began to get the measure of her player on the left and caused problems with some trademark 30 yard runs. Claire Saunders (now at centre half – desperate times and all eh?!) started to show some skills alongside a bit of chat for her new friend in the oppo. But then bad times struck – Imi Demetriou, having a solid game at centre back caught the ball on her ankle in a 50-50 and had to leave the pitch. Down to 10, and with Carra now at the back, Yateley took their chances as two quick goals went in (GOALS).
The 10 players put up a decent fight mind and still caused some problems. Laura Clark biting into a few tackles on the right and Gaynor ‘Magic’ Toms continuing to create issues for the oppo back line. Unfortunately Yateley soon found a 6th goal, and with 15 minutes remaining fear crept in as it could become a mauling.
Claire must have then said/done something, a sudden outburst from the oppo centre half “ I’m beginning to lose my patience with her!“ lead to some strong words for both players from the umpire and laughter from the sidelines! Back to a full 11 as Imi rejoined the field, things were beginning to change in Gosport’s favour once more. Revitalised, Imi put in some quality tackles in the heart of the defence, to then drive forward and create havoc for Yateley. One of these runs lead to a second goal. A strong run, interchange around the D left Magic with a chance, which she duly put away (GOAL). Further PCs for the whites and an open goal miss could have brought the score to a bit more respectability, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
